How does electrolysis work?

Electrolysis involves gently sliding a very fine probe into the natural opening of the hair follicle while alongside the hair and applying a current to the root of the follicle to destroy it. When the follicle root is destroyed completely, hair growth can be stopped permanently since the follicle is cut off from the blood supply. After the current is successfully applied to the destroyed root, the hair can be removed from the follicle effortlessly with tweezers. Each and every hair must be individually treated one at a time.

What’s the difference between galvanic, thermolysis, and the blend?

Electrolysis via a direct galvanic current was the original form of electrolysis and is not used today as thermolysis and the blend offer superior results. This approach causes a chemical reaction inside the follicle which produces lye and destroys the follicle.

Thermolysis is the use of a high frequency current that creates heat to destroy the hair follicle. Thermolysis is a very popular method today as it’s much faster than galvanic and the blend. This method is used effectively on all hair types.

The blend is a combination of the galvanic and thermolysis which is the best of both worlds. The blend is slightly slower than thermolysis but highly effective on tougher hairs like greys, whites, extra coarse hair or hair that has been previously treated with any type of hair removal resulting in distorted follicles.

We got you though honey. We can work with you to figure out which approach is best for you. All types of electrolysis are safe and effective.

What type of electrolysis is right for me?

At glowhoney, we use thermolysis and the blend. We don’t subscribe to a one-size fits all kind approach. We personalize your experience depending on your hair type (e.g. fine, medium, coarse, straight, wavy, curly), treatment area (e.g. facial area, armpits, hands, legs, arms etc.), and comfortability.

Which body areas can you do electrolysis on?

Electrolysis can be performed on any body part except for inside the nose, ears or on eyelashes. We do not perform treatments on moles. While we do treat bikinis, we do not currently treat the Brazilian area.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Electrolysis is the only permanent hair removal method recognized that is available today. For real. Some hairs will be permanently gone each treatment, never to return. Some will come back finer and will need follow-up treatment(s).

Who is electrolysis for?

Electrolysis is for everyone. We welcome all genders, any skin tone and any hair type. Inclusivity and diversity are near and dear to our hearts at glowhoney.

What types of hair can electrolysis work on?

Electrolysis can work on all types of hair including fine, in-between/medium, and coarse hair as well as white or grey hairs. Whether you have straight, wavy, or curly hair, rest assured electrolysis will work for you honey.

What types of skin and tones can electrolysis work on?

Electrolysis can accommodate every and all skin tones since it involves treating hair and not the skin. Whether you have dry skin, combination or oily skin, electrolysis will work for you. Keep in mind, staying extra hydrated helps your follicles stay naturally open and frictionless which may help to make your sessions more comfortable. Plus we heard it makes you glow honey!

How many treatments should I expect?

The average electrolysis client attends treatments for around 12-24 months. Everyone’s journey to permanent hair removal is unique and may be shorter or longer depending on your type of hair and follicle type. To level set, one square inch of skin can have up to 2000 dormant hair follicles. We tend to underestimate the amount of hair we have as hairs can be in different stages.

How to get the fastest results?

Electrolysis is most effective when the hair is in the first two weeks of the early growth phase i.e. anagen stage. Therefore, it is key that clients receive a treatment every 2 weeks. When the hair reaches later stages, the follicle root is more difficult to treat or the hairs may have already died and are working their way out of the body. Some of our clientele choose to come in more often than once every 2 weeks if they feel like they need it.

Don’t forget to stay extra hydrated 24 hours before appointments for a more comfortable experience.

Is it safe?

Electrolysis in all of its forms is considered to be a safe and effective permanent hair removal method. Rest assured, our technicians have a Diploma in Electrology as well as a commitment to get you glowing honey. We also pride ourselves on cleanliness and safety and always use a new, sterile needle for every client. Don’t worry, we got you.

Are there any side effects?

Some clients may experience redness and slight swelling in the area after 24 hours of the treatment. A small scab may form where a follicle insertion was made is totally normal and apart of the process for some. It’s key that you not touch or pick at these to prevent an infection and scarring. It’s key that you follow our aftercare instructions provided during your initial consultation.

Does it hurt?

Our founder and clients tell us that it feels like a heated tingling sensation. Some areas are more sensitive than others. We can work with you to ensure you’re comfortable while still achieving the results that you deserve.
